Thank you Tina for your post, we would love to see your photos on this website, please share on here or send via email to me… Many thanks!
Hi my name is Tina jarman my father was the head gardener for Dowtys (Hedley Heath Jarman).
i have many photos and one of the white deer in the park, be more than happy to share, and lots of photos of the big house and gardens.
My late husband worked for Dowty in various departments, Rotol and Seals as well as others, in the late 60s/early 70s. In 1978 We moved to Brockhampton, into one of the Edwardian houses built for estate workers in 1906. One was for the head gardener, then two semi-detached ones for the under gardener and the butler (I think). In the mews I remember seeing a huge block of concrete in front of the carriage shed which had been used as a test bed. My husband referred to the big house as Lady Dowty’s ballroom! I also remember seeing a Ban the Bomb symbol painted on the high wall by the mews entrance. My father visited the Park in the 1930’s when it belonged to the Mitchell family and remembered the white deer.
Thank you for your comments Peter, we would love to hear any stories that you have from your time at Dowty’s!
This has brought back some memories. I was born in Brockhampton park house in 1951 when it was a country club. As a child I can remember when Dowty bought the house. My grandfather had the farm just along the road where he owned the very steep field at the end of the deer park. This was where Dowty tested a new type of power drive on a tractor. Driving down the hill then putting it into reverse. All I can say was the test engineer must have been mad.
Anyway, I have more memories of this site as a your lad who later worked for Dowty for 31 years, that’s if you want to hear them. Just let me know.
