  • I can see my father, Les Tongue, in at least two of these photos. Picture 6 centre, dark suit, white hair, dark eyebrows. He was works manager when he retired in 1982. He died in 2003. 20 years happy retirement – thank you Dowty!

  • So many people, too numerous to mention, just reminds me of some wonderful days spent working with some lovely people over around 20 years. Started in 1975 as apprentice, and enjoyed what was far more than just a job. Happy memories.

  • The photograph below the 50 year service to Albert Noden shows my father Noel Fellows (front row, third in from the left) who worked in the Toolroom. Alongside him (second from the left) is his co-worker Colin Babb. Unfortunately dad passed away in 2017.

  • The photo of John Ware and the Machine Shop Guys – This is indeed George Russell – he was my grandad, sadly passed away in 2016, shortly after turning 93. It’s wonderful to find this picture, was shocked to see it – was looking on my phone and thought it looked like him, but couldn’t see properly on the small screen, then seeing Ian’s comment mentioning George Russell I had to check on the PC. Thank you so much for posting these.

  • My Grandfather Amarjit Singh Grewall (Also known as Armar) is in the photo with the two men shaking hands. (The only Indian male in the photo). He sadly passed away 23/03/17, aged 69.

He worked there from 1979-86, according to his CV he was responsible for the assembly and testing of various flying controls and also (at the the time) the latest fly by-wire technology for European fighter aircraft.
His friend Mick is also in the photo, third male from the left in front with long hair, full beard and dark shirt.

  • Tony Southwood and John Barber. Quality Control.
John worked at P.E.R.M.E. Westcott on Chevaline.
He did a great job on metrology.

  • The photo John Ware and the Machine Shop Guys. I think this is George Russell’s retirement presentation. George was a milling machinist. The dark haired inspector to the left of John Ware is Micky Maddox and the gentleman slightly behind is Lesley Jacks. Les was a character, having been torpedoed twice in the 2nd World War in the merchant navy. We always said the sharks never went near him because he was always shouting and swearing. The mean on the extreme left in the suit is Len Cox who retired just slightly before George but came back in for the day.

  • The photo below the 1962 Apprentices: I believe we are looking at the presentation of 50 years service to Albert Noden. He is being presented with his award by Fred Hewitt who was the Manufacturing Director. In the background is Machine Shop Superintendent Bill Mayfield. The two women on the left are Doreen and Cynthia. The little man 2nd from the left is Reggie Smith, the next youngest man to me when I finished my time at 56 in 1987.

  • The man in the very first photo, second right, sitting on the desk with sleeves rolled up to navy standard is my father, Roy Bowden, who joined BP from the navy in 1957 and stayed with Dowty until he retired in 1991. He passed away in January 2018, aged 91.
