The Dowty Group PLC of Britain announced Tuesday it has bought Hydraulic Units Inc., a subsidiary of the Boeing Co. that makes electro hydraulic and electro mechanical subsystems.
Dowty said the $42.5 million acquisition will significantly increase its aerospace presence in North America and strengthen its relationship with Boeing. HUI also provides a broad range of subsystems for military aircraft, such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 and F-18, Rockwell’s B1B and the Bell Boeing V- 22 Osprey.
Dowty is already a supplier to Boeing through its U.S. subsidiary, Dowty Decoto Inc.
The HUI acquisition is part of Dowty’s strategy to strengthen its aerospace and high technology business.
Dowty chief executive Tony Thatcher says: “We’ll make a good team, making us more competitive and productive in the USA”. Boeing is a significant user of HUI systems in the 737, 747, 757, and 767. It is also an established thrust-reverser company, and is developing electro-hydrostatic actuators and direct-drive valves.
Earlier it announced acquisition for 35.9 million ($59 million) of Woodville Polymer Engineering Ltd., a subsidiary of Colt Industries.
Woodville Polymer Engineering, a subsidiary of Colt Industries, USA, has been bought by Dowty Group for nearly £40 million cash. Woodville’s technology includes advanced polymer engineering, composites, insulation foams, and coated and fabricated products. Woodville is a major supplier to the Royal Navy of acoustic and radar absorption and decoupling polymers for stealth applications. These activities are complementary to Dowty’s own business in stealth and anti-submarine programmes.
