I worked extensively on R.O.L.F at Westoe Colliery, it was used on faces in the South Brassthill seam, I learned the hydraulic system off by heart under the guidance of the mechanisation team. As a 28-year old, it fired up my interest in hydraulics which lasted right through until my retirement two years ago. A working lifetime of 50+ years!
Thank you Alcwyn Elliot for your comments on this post, it is much appreciated, unfortunately we are not aware if there are any specifications available about this system in our archives… we are still documenting the records we have, if we come across anything of interest, we will notify you or post them on this website.
The Dowty ROLF eletrohydraulic system was a precursor to what we have today with the electrohydraulic longwall faces that can be remotely operated from the surface.
Is there a report available on the specification of operation of the system that I can read.
ROLF was installed in 1963 @ Ormonde and Newstead Collieries, face lengths 207 yds and 160 yds long.
Prior to these installations trials were carried out @ Cottonwood Colliery in Yorkshire.
