This picture of Dowty Electrics based in what was the old engine sheds in Station St Tewkesbury took me back to my time there as an apprentice in the early 70s. The Stores for small components were located in the apex overlooking the road with a single narrow wooden staircase being the only means of access/egress. In a fire emergency the only way out would be sit in a sort of seat harness and step out of the window into empty space with speed of descent being controlled by a damping device which, as one descended, sent another harness up to load next person. As the minion I was volunteered to be the “jumper” for evacuation practices. Never again. Didn’t even get an act of bravery mention in my Indentures. Another memory is the regular visit of John Rimmel the hairdresser who also serviced Arle Court and maybe even Rotol I think.
