Unless there was more than one of these Local BMA branch visits, I was there on that occasion, standing in for Graham Lockyer. It was a good visit, with Tony Thatcher doing his customary great job of marketing the company. Two things stand out in my memory: After Dinner with the visitors (following a tour of Dowty Aerospace Gloucester) Tony took me to one side and instructed me to ask the Gloucester Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) representative to provide a list of equipment needs from which we could select and donate a meaningful gift to them. Though I did this, we never heard back from them, despite some chasing. Secondly, some machinist from No.2 Shop at DAG were asked to stay on for a couple of hours for the visit. We were offered a reciprocal visit to the SCBU and Tony instructed me to ensure that those machinist had first refusal for the trip – which I did – and we enjoyed an interesting visit a week or two later. Tony Thatcher had his critics, but he was good-hearted and good with people.
