  • The photo John Ware and the Machine Shop Guys. I think this is George Russell’s retirement presentation. George was a milling machinist. The dark haired inspector to the left of John Ware is Micky Maddox and the gentleman slightly behind is Lesley Jacks. Les was a character, having been torpedoed twice in the 2nd World War in the merchant navy. We always said the sharks never went near him because he was always shouting and swearing. The mean on the extreme left in the suit is Len Cox who retired just slightly before George but came back in for the day.

  • The photo below the 1962 Apprentices: I believe we are looking at the presentation of 50 years service to Albert Noden. He is being presented with his award by Fred Hewitt who was the Manufacturing Director. In the background is Machine Shop Superintendent Bill Mayfield. The two women on the left are Doreen and Cynthia. The little man 2nd from the left is Reggie Smith, the next youngest man to me when I finished my time at 56 in 1987.

  • The man in the very first photo, second right, sitting on the desk with sleeves rolled up to navy standard is my father, Roy Bowden, who joined BP from the navy in 1957 and stayed with Dowty until he retired in 1991. He passed away in January 2018, aged 91.
