The history of Gloucestershire’s global engineering group

The Dowty Group foundations were in aviation, with Sir George’s internally sprung aircraft wheel being the ground-breaking product that began it all.
From there, aerospace remained at the core of the group’s business, expanding into a wide-ranging and world-leading product portfolio including landing gear, propellers, flying controls, hydraulic actuators, fuel systems, ram air turbines, and gear boxes.
Whilst most of the output was initially for military aircraft, this slowly switched over to a majority of civil applications by the turn of the millennium. The group also provided ‘cradle to grave’ support for aircraft constructors, air forces and airlines - from research and development right through to product support and repair and overhaul.
